NATIONAL Captital District Governor Powes Parkop (pictured) says he wants to help promote business skills among Motu-Koitabu people because they are entirely cash dependent.

He said the Motu-Koitabu people had given up their land in Port Moresby, and were not able to fall back to their traditional way of living or traditional economy.

He said all they needed was economic empowerment, which would enable them to survive in the cash economy.

Parkop said this at Vabukori in Port Moresby when lunching an economic empowerment programme for Motu Koitabu people last Thursday.

He said other Papua New Guineans could go back to their land and still live in their communities where they had enough resources to look after them. But Motu Koitabu people have their fishing grounds affected by ships moving in and out.

He said an initial K400,000 was made available from NCDC provincial support improvement programme to fund this project.

This money would be made available to 154 applicants from Motu-Koitabu villagers to start up small businesses.

“We want to open up for income generation by promoting business skills among our Motu Koitabu people,” he said.

He urged the Motu-Koitabu people turn to business and become good at it.

Former Maprik MP Gabriel Kapris, who attended the event, shared similar sentiments.
