MOROBE Governor Ginson Saonu says his government is keen on developing sports in the province, in addition to building classrooms and bridges, and paying school fees.
He said this when officiating during the seventh Wawens Cup final at Lae Football Association Park on Sunday.
“We support sports too,” Saonu told the crowd.
“We not only build classrooms and bridges, and pay school fees.
“Sports are also part of development.”
He said sports were just for entertainment in the past, but were now a development platform for the country.
“Playing sports draws the attention of leaders, planners and decision makers to use sports as an instrument for development like building stadiums,” Saonu said.
“I can’t be everywhere talking about sports.
“You are representing our people in the 33 local-level government areas across the nine districts.
“You made the trip as an ambassador of your area.
“You came to promote sports and our province.
“Sports unify people of different walks of life, they also help us stay healthy.” Saonu said through soccer last year, his office had supported Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League franchises Morobe Wawens and Morobe United.
“Leaders are not the only ones who promote the province, young sportsmen and women too,” he said.
“Your performances and skills will be sought to represent the province through sports.
“As leaders, we’ll promote our province.”
