Governor: Moem road is not my responsibility

THE Government is responsible for fixing the Moem Barracks road, says East Sepik Governor Allan Bird.
“All institutional roads belong to the Government, not us,” he said.
“But if they ask us to fix it, we will be happy to fix it.
“Last time we tried to go fix it, they said the Australians would fix it — that was two years ago.”
Bird said there were certain roads in some provinces that fell under the responsibility of the Government and the Moem Road was one of them.
He said Moem road went into the barracks housing the Second Royal Pacific Islands Regiment and his government had no say over the national road.
“From the airport all the way to Brandy, that’s our road and we fixed it. But the one that turns off into the barracks, that’s not our road,” Bird said.
He said fixing the road was easier said than done as when the provincial government attempted to do repairs on it they were told that they needed permission from the Government.
“We’ve been asking the national government to fix that particular road, but have gotten nowhere,” Bird said.
He said that there had been a similar situation some time ago with one of the roads leading to the west coast of the province.
“The road had been neglected by the national government and so the provincial government had to step in to fix it,” Bird said.
