MORE than 300 employees of Madang’s Ramu NiCo’s KBK Mine have registered for with the Civil and Identity Registry (PNGCIR) for national identity (NID) cards, according to a statement from the company.
Madang’s NID operations team leader Benny Suin said it was important to have the cards for the identification and voting once the biometric system was used.
KBK registered mine manager and general manager Joseph Umare was happy to host the NID team to register its employees.
“I don’t have an NID card so I need one, and we can see that the government wants us to get one,” he said.
Umare said the future was with NID cards and it was important that the employees went through the process to acquire their cards.
Ramu NiCo human resources manager Jeffers Heptol was impressed with the NID team as they worked to register as many employees including contractors over three days.
“At one point they worked until 1.30am and that shows that the Government is serious about getting citizens in the country registered through the NID system,” he explained.
According to the company, more than 300 employees including those employed by contractors such as Raibus security, Raibus engineering and NCS catering services had the opportunity to register. Heptol thanked the NID office in Madang for accepting the company’s invitation and for their effort in registering employees at KBK.
The PNGCIR office is mandated to record births, adoptions, marriages, divorces, deaths and issues NID cards for all citizens to be accounted for and recognised with the cards and information to be used for developmental initiatives.
