NATIONAL Capital District Governor and Port Moresby Vipers patron Powes Parkop says the 2021 Digicel Cup season has proven to be tough with most teams being competitive.
He said that during yesterday’s announcement of Joe Sipa as the new Vipers head coach.
Parkop said the team were aiming to finish the season strongly despite a slow start to the 2021 campaign.
He backed the Vipers to produce a better campaign than last season’s top-four finish.
“I believe that this year will be a good year for the Vipers,” Parkop said.
“Last year, we fell short in the semifinals.
“But this time, I’m hoping that we will go all the way to the grand final.
“But the Digicel Cup is always a tough competition.
“I’ve seen that all the teams are very good in terms of stamina and tactics. For the Vipers, with new coach Sipa, I’m confident that we can achieve our goal this season.
“After watching Digicel Cup games this season, I can see that Mendi Muruks are playing very well.
“I’m happy with the Muruks, they are playing a structured game.
“Last week, the Wigmen and Vipers compete well, it was a close game despite the Wigmen being held scoreless.
“All the others teams also competing well every week. The intensity is there and most games are balanced.
“That’s what we want, we want to raise the standard for our competition.”
Meanwhile, Parkop thanked former Vipers coach Leonard Tarum for his services to the club.
He said Tarum, a former player, would always be a Viper regardless of wherever his coaching career took him.
