NEW Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan is disappointed about the slow progress of the Lossuk to Lavolai road project in the province.
Sir Julius said his government was committed to carrying out their promises and as such, wanted to see work being done on projects.
He instructed provincial works manager Solomon Pela to ensure the contractor started the job and completed it on time.
Sir Julius’ comments came after a hectic week of meetings and inspections which the governor and his team started with a joint provincial budgetary committee meeting on June 17.
The provincial assembly had its final sitting on June 19 and Sir Julius met with intending candidates for the upcoming local level government elections.
Sir Julius also met with the chief executive officer of Jarim, a Thailand company contracted to roll out a multi-million kina solar power project for Namatanai, Konos and Kavieng.
The New Ireland development corporation will overlook the project.
On Thursday, Sir Julius and his officials attended a launch of a community meeting hall in Tikana LLG where communities where urged to take the initiative in implementing projects instead of waiting for government handouts.
The team then went to Fatmalik to launch the “healthy island” concept.
Again, the community used their own initiative to build a conference hall.
The concept advocates for the use of traditional ways to address issues like lawlessness.
“By strengthening our systems of governance that have been practiced by our ancestors for hundreds of years, we can make our communities better,” chief Demas Kavavu said.
