THE Government stands ready to help people who have been affected by the floods, Minister for Inter-Government Relations and National Disaster Kevin Isifu says.
Isifu said the country had an emergency response plan for floods and would act on it once they had assessed the situation and found that it required the attention of the National Disaster Centre.
“We have provincial governments and provincial disaster offices, who will look into the situation but if they find that the issue is bigger for them to address than the national disaster centre can step in,” Isifu said.
“Currently, we have not received any reports yet.”
Isifu said they were ready to help but needed to have the reports before they could step in.
“We need an assessment report on the damages and also we need to establish the extent of the damage so that we can determine if it needs to be addressed from a national scale or a provincial scale,” he said.
“The national disaster office is also coordinating with people on the ground, so I urge the provincial governments of the affected provinces to send in an assessment report as soon as possible so we can assist wherever we can,” he said.
Homes were destroyed, infrastructures damaged and food crops washed away in floods that affected parts of the country.
