PETROLEUM Minister Kerenga Kua says a senior management team from Total will be in the country this week to discuss the next steps to take in the Papua LNG project.
He told The National that the meeting between the developer of the Papua LNG project and a Government team had been planned last week but there were some delays due to certain protocols and clearances.
Kua said the Total team was working on getting clearance and would arrive in the country this week.
The announcements for the Papua LNG project will be made on Dec 17.
Prime Minister James Marape said in a recent Parliament sitting that other parties including ExxonMobil PNG and Oil Search Ltd would participate in the discussions to progress the project into its next phase.
Marape said Total’s meeting with the Government was for them “to tell us the exact timeline of the Papua LNG project”.
“The economy should be happy and excited that Papua LNG hasn’t been scraped off as far as direct foreign investment is concerned,” he said.
Meanwhile, the country’s national oil and gas company, Kumul Petroleum Holdings Ltd (KPHL)hopes to work with the developer of the Papua LNG project and its joint venture partners to start the project next year.
Managing director Wapu Sonk told The National last week that KPHL hoped to work with Total and the joint venture partners to start the front-end engineering design work and the liquefied natural gas marketing and financing work for the project now that all legislative hurdles had been cleared.

  • That is the key factors that will boost PNG’s economy and the government must take positive approach to look into it carefully. It will also create again many job opportunities for Papua New Guineans and local contractors which in terms of triggering economic growth of the country.
However, Papua LNG has been so far discussed here in the meeting but what about Pogera mine? Is the government also include Barrick Niugini in the discussion and when is the pogera mine will be reopen again? That will also be the concern for many local contractors at the site and also lot of jobs that has been lost due to its closure which they would like it to open asap.

  • The ministerial team must remind the Total men that their planned Mozambique oil project is in a very dangerous area with over 400000 people running away from Islamists who have been butchering landowners there. Exxon has put their plans for the same oil fields in the Cape Delgado area on hold.

  • Taking back PNG?open you big eyes and see from the media, non of the previous PMs has sign a good agreement in all our resource sectors by taking some good percentages and own it like PMJM did on Porgera Mine for 40-50% ownershipand he plans to do on other mine as well so good news to us PNG as a whole, pig yu hat wok lo lukautim stap na narapela man kam kilim kaikai na givim yu liklik skin or bun ba yu wanbel???

  • Good approach towards the benefit of the PNG citizen, this should have been done by the other MPs in office.
Nogat Mr yes no lusim ya we PNGeans can run the show only if we change our culture and attitudes. All this
benefit will be vanished soon as the new PM gain the seat choas……… corruption back door deals.
We need young intelligent brains in the parliament it’s about time.

We can’t blame the current gov’t today, I think PM JM doing far better then for the PNGeans and beyond 2022.

    • Tobras, you said well, only the people who have the love for this nation and its people will see it that way.

PNGeans, just pause and ask this question: “What differences will these old stocks do in just 18 months????” These are nothing but all bunch of corrupt leaders..

  • PM JM has done a tremendous job in this short time as the PM of PNG . He actioned the words he spoke to make our nation and our people to be the richest black nation in the whole world because our country is filty rich with many resources you may think of by changing the Mining and petroleum act which non of the previous Governments have done, I don’t understand why Governors and Members of those resource rich Provinces are doing in the opposition camp ???
