Govt’s Duran Farm plan to address housing issues for locals

HOUSING issues for locals should not be a problem next year with the Government’s plan to build low-cost housing at the Duran Farm, says Housing and Urban Development Minister Justin Tkatchenko.
He said prices would range from K150,000 to K400,000 a home.
The National Housing Corporation recently won a court battle against a landowner group claiming to be the traditional owners of the Duran Farm land.
“Five companies have been pre-selected from 10 companies who applied to build homes at Duran Farm,” he said.
“These companies have put their hands up to build low-cost housing (from) 2022.”
The 60 homes currently at Duran will be demolished after it was found that they had asbestos in them.
“A company has been tasked to demolish the 60 houses.
“This company is qualified and certified to handle the removal of asbestos-filled homes.
“Once the homes are removed, the five companies who have been selected will move in and start building the homes.”
Prime Minister James Marape is expected to announce the affordable housing plan next week.
