Commission to run by ’23

THE Independent Commission against Corruption (ICAC) is expected to be up and running by 2023, according to its interim chairman Thomas Eluh.
Eluh said it was difficult to set up ICAC especially because of the strong sense of regionalism and wantok system, fuelled by an ailing economy, high employment rate, weak public service and dysfunctional services in education, law and order, and health which create an environment rife for corruption to thrive unabated.
“Not everyone will appreciate the time required to create a new agency from scratch,” he said.
“We expect citizens to be grumbling about delays in starting ICAC given that the country was suffering the consequences of corruption described as systemic and systematic.”
