THE National Capital District Rugby Union competition commenced its second round of matches for the 2018 season over the weekend as teams took to the field at the PNG Football Stadium, Sir John Guise sports precinct.
The final match of on Saturday was the premier division game which saw the Greyhounds come away with a 13-0 win over the Western Lagatois.
The match was a scrappy affair with both teams guilty of committing numerous handling errors. However this didn’t discourage either side from playing an expansive style of rugby, with both teams willing to spread the ball.
It was the Greyhounds who had the edge over the Western Lagatois as they finished off their chances with two tries in the second half.
The Lagatois couldn’t hold on to the ball for any sustained period of time, and it limited the chances, while the Greyhound’s defence held together to keep the Lagatois at bay.
Greyhounds captain Derreck Domara told The National that with the new group of players the club is looking to build a good foundation around them.
“As much as we tried to stick to the basics, break up into our pods playing one ruck at a time, get over the advantage line. But the Western Lagatois were quite tough in their defence they really wanted this win. But we came out on top, and the more determined team won today,” Domara said.
“Looking forward to next week, we have to work on our support play, we are a bit slow getting to breakdown and securing the ball for the next phase, that’s the most important thing in rugby, maintaining the ball.”
Lagatois coach Tony Charlie said his side had a lot of work to do on their scrum as well as the ruck.
“Considering our efforts against the Greyhounds, who are a good team and have been playing for a while, and for us to hold them try less in the first half was a good effort form the boys,” Charlie said.
