A FATHER mourning for his son, one of the 11 shot dead while escaping from Buimo Prison last month, is blaming police and prison officers for his death.
“My son wouldn’t be in this coffin if the police and Correctional Service had done their job well,” Nelson Jonah, the father of Fittler Jonah, 26, said.
He said Fittler was on remand awaiting the hearing of an alleged murder case with two cousins in prison when he joined others in the breakout on August 14.
He said Fittler and two others were arrested on June 7, 2018 but the case was dismissed on Dec 5.
They were rearrested on June 26, 2019 and had been awaiting trial in prison for over a year.
“So you can understand the confusion and frustration which led to this,” he said.
“How can you throw people into jail and not follow-up or push for their case?
“This is very disappointing,” he said.
“The state has failed my son and my family.”
Fittler’s body was taken home yesterday and will be buried today at the Butibam cemetery in Lae.

  • “My son wouldn’t be in this coffin if the police and Correctional Service had done their job well,” Nelson Jonah, the father of Fittler Jonah, 26, said…..SAD BUT REALLY, HIS SON WOULD STILL BE ALIVE HAD HE NOT DASHED FOR FREEDOM!!

    • True, but why are you holding people in prison for long periods without having their cases heard. Remember, they are innocent until found guilty

  • It is such misconstruance of the law and generally accepted behavioral attitudes that is rampantly passed on from one generation to the next. The father should know very well that it was his son’s own fault that he now lies in the coffin lifeless. Accept that fact and get on with your life. No wonder every new generation is being corrupted by none other persons than their own parents. What a pity!!!

  • NO CRIME, NO ARREST ,NO JAIL, NO DEATH ,THAT IS THE FORMULA OF LIFE.
simple life evolved in this sense , If you commit no crime, you wont be arrested, you wont die trying to escape.
WAKE UP TO THE REAL WORLD. THINK AND TALK MAN!!!! STOP THE BLAME BUSINESS ON CIS AND POLICE .. ALL BLAME SHOULD BE TO THE FATHER – HE FAILED TO DO HIS JOB AS A FATHER,WHO DID NOT ADVICE YOUR SON WHEN HE WAS SMALL WITH THE VALUE OF LIFE AND RESPECT OTHERS, LIFE IS NOT A GAMBLE …MOST OF US ALWAYS LOOK FOR SOME ONE TO TAKE THE BLAME, IN THIS CASE STATE AND POLICE/CIS ARE DOING THEIR JOBS, WHY DO YOU ESCAPE WHEN THE LAW SAYS NO, REMAND IN CUSTODY, ITS NOT RUN FOR YOUR LIFE, YOU ARE A JOKE…MOST OF US ARE PRIMITIVE AND NEED TO DEVELOP OUR BRAINS TO KNOW, RIGHT FROM WRONG…

  • Sad Reality:
His son will still be alive, if we, as Parents work tirelessly with our kids when they are still young by instilling good moral Principles and Values into them.
The Reality is not all of them will turn out to be a Good Law abiding citizens, some will choose to pursue another path that will eventually lead them to (their own) destruction (destiny).
It’s not use crying over the spilt milk if we didn’t do our part as Parents.

    Mr. Jonah’s son will still be alive;
    1) If he didn’t end up in the Prison at the first place. He went there due to the crime he committed or was part of,
    2) If he stayed put and did not take the matters into his own hands by trying to escape with the other prisoners when in full custody.

On a further note, if his son is innocent why should he try to escape, he should stay put, However, on the other hand, “Justice Delayed is Justice Denied”.

I am sure that there is an independent investigation into the 11 deaths.
Whoever the officer is, if and when found guilty of pulling the trigger will definitely face the full force of the Law.
There is also the “Rules of Engagement” that they (Investigation Team) will look into in determining the outcome of what happened, and if found guilty, then the cause of action to take to bring those responsible to justice.

  • Its plain and simple. This is not an innocent bystander, he is a criminal on remand dashing for freedom. If the police used excessive force, it can be determined in court but to shift all the blame on the state is illogical to say the least.

  • What a pity……. Very sad when people say they are Christian meaning being Christ like when we don’t simple understand the bible itself. we read in Romans 6:23 stated “for the wages of sin is death” yet this very father being ignorant to the word of God. I see no point to point fingers or pursue legal court action. May God be the judge over the case.

  • Mexy and Josef, what this father said is true. Have you been to jails recently? There are prisoners awaiting their court hearing for more than 5 years and more prisoners kept on coming in causing overcrowding that can make prisoners dash for freedom. You guys think like all PNGeans think ‘bad people, they deserve what they get’ but you cannot come up with good solution for everyone whether it be a good citizen or bad

  • All around the world I see only one person whether good or bad when killed by it’s own state forces can cause widespread strikes or riots by the public to get states attention but in PNG when 11 people are killed by state no one come up with questions or campaigns for such. We just don’t care for other peoples lives.

  • VERY SAD….. I sometimes think if I were one those who face law and orders issues and suddenly leads to shock death How would life be, Why I born to this earth….. My father was such a Goodman who often called me home and give me STIA TOK for me to become man of my own. I sorry because Mr: Fittler was the only cause of his sons death. No one is born to be on his own……. live isolation…….. you as a parent have the obligation and duty.

  • We’ll you’ve failed miserably to teach your son the basic principles of life. You have to blame yourself instead of CS or Police

  • When you done anything wrong, there’s only one single answer to set you free..Just tell the trust. ( John 8:32)

  • This father should be held responsible for his son’s crime and eventually his death as well. He son wouldn’t commit the crime if he has thought him well when he was a kid. He failed to impart the values of being a good son in a society, yet he seems fit to blame the state. Sorry for the innocent son.

  • Am in support of Starsha’s comments “…, what this father said is true. Have you been to jails recently? There are prisoners awaiting their court hearing for more than 5 years and more prisoners kept on coming in causing overcrowding that can make prisoners dash for freedom. You guys think like all PNGeans think ‘bad people, they deserve what they get’ but you cannot come up with good solution for everyone whether it be a good citizen or bad”

To add on, most of these 11 deaths were remand at Buimo meaning whatever their crimes are; they are NOT GUILTY until proven GUILTY by the COURT’S. They are not like other inmates were the court’s found them guilty and have serve their time at Buimo. We must understand that difference.

The point am trying to stress is, Are we all citizens of this Nation NOT deserving equal justice? The main problem is with our justice system and not the individual police, CS officers or Court Officials.
We must look at options and way forward to help link gaps in our justice system so the guilt can fairly serve their prison terms as deserve according to the nature of their crimes and the innocents must not be kept captive as they deserve freedom.

I would suggest if our graduating lawyers from UPNG out there can come up with an initiative to establish an organisation (free legal support/all legal fees to be meet by the organisation for unfortunates) just to help the remands and inmates. Have time to interview them, establish the nature of their case, investigate their case files and you’ll know whether you have a case to pursue or not. Moreover, this organisation purpose and vision must be clear apart from the Public Solicitors Office and in this way; the organisation can source funding nationally and internationally as well to serve its purpose.

You win a case for a first Papua New Guinean who have been innocent and in prison as a remand for more than five years or appeal cases for inmates who have been wrongly sentenced to serve time on crimes they did not commit and I tell you, you victory in winning cases will be the families, communities and country victory. The simply people will strongly support the course of the organisation to see fare and equal justice for all.

Why am saying this is because, the process of prosecuting an offender in this Country is a nightmare and the concern government institutions (CIS, Police and Courts/Justice Departments) must look into ways of addressing this continues problem to avoid more escapes in the future.
