MEMBERS of the Police Legacy received a timely contribution to its fund yesterday, courtesy of several corporate partners at the police headquarters officers’ mess.

The occasion saw the organisation add K40,000 from six corporate donors, boosting its capacity to fund the support of dependents of policemen and women who died  serving the force.

Half of the donation came from aviation tycoon and philanthropist Robert Agorobe. The other organisations such as RH Enterprise, Aviat Club, Aero Club, Petromin and PNG Air Service chipped in.

Governor-General and the patron of the organisation Sir Michael Ogio said that throughout Australasia, “the support for dependents of police officers who fell while serving their communities, in what can be stressful and dangerous circumstances, is supplemented well by developed economies and governmental welfare mechanisms”.

Sir Michael said PNG had not reached that level in terms of support to the dependents.

He said the PNG Police Legacy was vital to ensure that worthy descendants of serving police officers did not suffer for the sacrifice that their parents took to serve the police wholeheartedly.

The organisation, formed in 1987 by the then police commissioner the late David Tasion, has 1,000 subscribing members which include former members of the constabulary and Kiaps.

The occasion yesterday was the first half its fund-raising drive for this year.
