A MEDICAL fundraising appeal conducted by a group of men and women to buy oxygen cylinders for the Goroka Base Hospital has been given a huge boost with a donation of K10,000.
The Eastern Highlands Adventist students association, which is made up of elites from the province, set up the fundraising appeal to help Goroka Base Hospital cope with the increasing the Coronavirus (Covid-19) cases.
While presenting a cheque for K10,000 on Monday, owner of Bintangor Trading Ltd Simon Sia said the hospital was the only referral hospital for eight districts in the province and was currently under significant pressure to contain, treat
and attend to the Covid-19 patients as the number of cases in the province surged.
“The situation has prompted the Eastern Highlands educated elites to set up the fundraising drive quickly to do volunteer contributions to help the Goroka Base Hospital purchase oxygen cylinders,” he said.
Sia said the shortage of oxygen was one of the biggest challenges for health authorities and medical professionals at the hospital.
“We cannot sit back and watch the awful situation in isolation without coming out with assistance to mitigate the spread of the virus in the province,” he said.
“It is an alarming situation and everyone needs to help fight the spread of the virus. It’s better to save someone’s life than to share condolences with the immediate family members of the deceased.”
