POLICE have told the leaders of two tribal groups involved in a fight at a settlement in Port Moresby resulting in the death of two men to surrender the suspects and the weapons.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’dranou told the leaders of the groups from Wabag and Goroka living at the Morata suburb that it was important to maintain peace for their safety.
One man from each group died during the fight which had been on-going for some time.
During mediation talks at the Waigani Police Station yesterday, the Goroka group surrendered the weapons they had. The Wabag group said they did not have any guns and were not responsible for the death of the Goroka man.
N’dranou told them since they did not want to surrender any suspects, “we will wait for the post-mortem to be done and ballistic results to come out to identify the cause of the deaths”.
“I will have police units patrolling the Morata settlement on a regular basis to make sure no more violence will arise in the future,” he said.
“Two people have already died, three houses burnt and a gun confiscated.”
The village court also issued the two parties an order to stop causing any further violence.
