Madang police uprooted 29 marijuana plants found on Karkar Island on Sunday.
Acting police commander Senior Inspector Jacob Bando said police found the plants at Did and Rigen villages on Karkar Island and took them to Madang yesterday.
Bando said the grower was tipped off that police were on their way and he escaped before Singirok and his team arrived. He said the suspect’s name was being withheld but he would be arrested soon.
Bando said Karkar Island has recently reported an increase in marijuana and homebrew-related incidents. People growing marijuana should know that the penalties were severe, he said.
Seventh Day Adventist Church pastor David Kiak said God created human beings with clear conscience and gave the power of choice for them to choose to stay healthy.
Kiak said when a person consumed marijuana it affected and weakened his or her mind and the devil would take advantage of that and control the person to harm or hurt other people.
He said people who cannot stay away from drugs should seek help.
“The battle to choose between right and wrong in our minds is a spiritual battle so we must always ask God for help,” Kiak said.
