Strong winds destroyed several houses along Lese and Miaru in Gulf on New Year’s Eve, leaving more than 15 families homeless.
Police commander Inspector Silva Sika said the families who had lost their homes to strong winds were now in refugee camps.
“These people are now in refugee camps and have no food in the garden that they can feed on and also no fresh water,” he said.
Sika said strong winds continue to blow across west side going towards Kikori and Baimuru and affected some houses.
“People must take responsibility to look after themselves by not going out to sea for fishing and making sago to avoid unexpected deaths,” he said.
People were affected because they get their food from garden and the sea.
He said the local-level government (LLG) manager from Lese area have already received reports to support the people affected.
“I commend the people of Gulf for celebrating the New Year with a true spirit with no major incidents reported,” he said.
Only the strong winds that affected the people and rough seas coming up.
