A LATE Michael Timothy try saw Gulf Isou grab their first win of the Digicel Cup the season after they edged Enga Mioks 18-16 in round four on Saturday.
The main clash of Port Moresby’s double-header at the Oil Search National Football Stadium saw a quiet start with an error-riddled first half.
Quick reaction from the Isou halves saw them score early through centre Makara Hura.
But a strong Mioks offence saw them respond with two tries via second-rower Nickson Borana and No.6 MacQuain Gabriel for a 10-6 lead at halftime.
The Isou pack, under returning skipper Ricko Jimmy, set the groundwork for hooker Charles Kumbi to cross over for their second try with halfback Roger Laka adding the extras for a 12-10 lead.
But Isou’s poor ball security brought the Mioks back into the game with hooker Aaron Paul capitalising to score a four-pointer under the uprights for the Engans to regain a 16-12 lead.
A stronger Isou finish in the final quarter of the match saw playmaker Timothy stepping through Mioks defenders to deliver the match-winning try 10 minutes from fulltime.
“A lot mistakes but two points any day of the week is good for us,” Isou coach Bagelo Solien said.
“I was impressed with Emmanuel Parua and our skipper (Ricko Jimmy) who had been out for two games.”
“The whole team turned up and played well.”
