Gerehu Young Guns, a team coached and trained by former PNG Kumuls and SP Hunters strongman Timothy Lomai, are leading their pool after having three wins in the annual NCD Governor’s Cup challenge.
The Young Guns slogan of ‘not just a team but a family’ has brought the players together once again this Christmas to showcase their talent by leading the competition.
They have the bonus of an experienced manger who has molded the team to register three straight wins so far.
The team has high hopes that they have qualified for the cup play off on Friday after a three-day break.
In their last game on Sunday at Bill Skate Oval at Kaugere, the Young Guns escaped with a narrow 12-10 win against Saraga Survivors in what was a brutal and physical match.
Lomai was a happy man after the boys won all three matches they played in their pool E that consisted of some tough teams like Bomana United, 289 Warriors, Wildlife Pythons and Toks Nest United.
In their first game against Bomana United on Friday, the Guns had no mercy, defeating United 14-6. On Saturday the Guns beat Nest United.
Lomai said each team was supposed to play three games and would qualify for the finals if it had won all three.
The Guns have passed that barrier and are now awaiting the finals which kick off on Friday.
The NCD Governor’s Christmas Cup started last Friday and the last regular games were held on Monday.
Yesterday, today and tomorrow are rest days for all 54 teams and officials will also be finalising the points table and set the draws for the playoffs on Friday.
The 54 teams were placed in eight pools.
All teams have had to play three games each.
Young Guns, who have won all their three games lead pool E.
The other teams leading in their pools are: Koraway Spiders (Pool A); Makana Cowboys (Pool B); Fiv-Mile Kongo (Pool C); Southern Stars (Pool D); Marane Stoneville (Pool F); Five-Mile Inter Ducks (Pool G); and Mountain Bulls and Freeway Bumpers (Pool H).
