WITH the confirmation of new franchise Gulf Isou to take part in the 2018 Digicel Cup competition, youths from the province are excited about the pathway provided for them.
With the festive season going on, Lese Oalai village in Gulf, the home of Governor Chris Haiveta is currently hosting a Christmas rugby league tournament with two teams each taking part in three divisions.
Tournament coordinator Bosco Kose said the games were part of a process to identify talent for the new Gulf franchise that will be supported by the newly established Gulf Sports Trust, representing the people of the province.
“We have this tournament here which is supported by Governor Chris Haiveta and after this we will select a team from Lese Oalai to take part in the ward games that will be after the New Year,” Kose said.
“Originally we wanted to have teams from both Lese Oalai and Lese Kavora, however due to the death of two prominent figures from Lese Kavora, they pulled out.
“We have urged young men in the villages who have an interest and talent to play rugby league to play well so they can get selected into the ward games and then onto the Gulf Isou.
“It would be exciting to see young talents from Gulf showcase their potential in the Digicel Cup next year.”
Kose also mentioned that the games were used as a vehicle to keep youths away from illegal activities.
