THE Rabaul Gurias and Kimbe Cutters are awaiting approval from their respective provincial health authorities before they can hold a trial match this month, according to an official.
Gurias manager Mapua Tamtu told The National last week that the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) had also advised them not to hold any trials during the national isolation period.
“Both sides are ready to play the first of two trial matches,” Tamtu said.
“The matches are scheduled to be held at the Kalabond Oval in Kokopo.
“But with the Covid-19 situation, that can’t happen at this time.
“We will try to seek approval from the authorities on the ground,” he said.
“Otherwise, we will follow PNGRFL’s advice.
“PNGRFL has advised us not to hold any trial matches during the isolation period.”
Meanwhile, Tamtu said the Gurias were still in camp despite the deferral of the Digicel Cup season kick-off.
He said they had 27 players in camp.
“We haven’t broken camp despite the long delay of the trials,” Tamtu said.
“We have called off training this week because of the delay.
“But on Friday, we’ll probably have a short session.
“We just want to make sure we keep fit through the next four weeks.”
Tamtu said there was a possibility that the PNG National Rugby League Competition (PNGNRLC) would host games in a few centres.
He said Gurias were ready if there was a change.
“If we are going to play away from home like last year then there shouldn’t be a problem,” Tamtu said.
“I believe the players can handle it.”
