LADDER leaders Rabaul Gurias are aiming to rebound from last week’s loss when they host Waghi Tumbe in their round-nine Digicel Cup fixture at the Kalabond Oval tomorrow.
The clash will be interesting for former Tumbe trio Joe Frank, Saki Peter and Daniel Pai, who will face their old club.
Gurias coach Francis Ray said following last Sunday’s 6-18 loss to Hela Wigmen that his men would need to improve their defence against visitors Tumbe.
“We defended well, but dropped off late in the game,” he said.
“So we need to improve in the next game.
“Our attack is good, but we need to finish well.
“Our Completions are also important.”
Against the Wigmen, the Gurias’ spine of halfback Ase Boas, No.6 Saki Peter and rake Nathan Tente struggled to find the right attacking options, which yielded just one try despite having almost 50 per cent of possession.
The trio will want to improve their attack against Tumbe.
Jiwaka government-sponsored Tumbe have dropped to 10th spot on the 12-team ladder following last Sunday’s 14-22 loss to cellar dwellers Mt Hagen Eagles.
Tumbe will want to win to stay within range of the top-six, and experienced campaigners Thompson Teteh, Supa Kokote and Mark Mexico will be expected to step up.
Meanwhile, Cutters will be looking for their third win on the trot when they host Goroka Lahanis at Kimbe Rugby League Oval tomorrow.
Cutters have climbed to 11th spot, just two points behind the eighth-placed visitors.
