Cats eyeing chance at premiership

CATS say they are eyeing the Port Moresby Australian Football League A-grade premiership as they continue to dominate after five rounds at the Colts Oval.
West Eagles, who have continued a winning start, sit atop the 10-team ladder while Cats have recorded four wins and a loss to occupy second spot.
Cats coach Joe Maggio told The National on Saturday that he was counting on his rookie players despite their lack of experience.
“We don’t have any representative or experienced players,” he said.
“The bulk of our players are rookies. We have a few players who have been part of the national junior programme.
“These players are making an impact in our games. That is why we’ve lost just one game so far this season. But the season is still long.
“We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves.
“But I’m happy with players like Peniel Penias, Junior Porti, Sydney Pits and Troy Bonga.
“They have been great in the last five rounds.
“We have what it takes to be genuine title contenders.
“But it comes back to how we turn up each week.
“Consistency is important.
“We have to continue to improve our performance each week.”
