RISING junior tennis star Colita Hakena has defended and won back-to-back U14 Girls Single title after defeating Phoebe Godward-Smith 6-4, 6-1 in the 2024 Victorian Grass-Court championship in Wodonga over the weekend.
The soon to be 14-year-old Papua New Guinean prodigy has had a great start to her tennis career this year after obtaining an International Tennis Federation (ITF) sanctioned scholarship to be part of the Oceania Tennis Federation touring team in 2024.
The recent tour in Wodonga, Victoria, Australia also saw the youngster also claim the A grade women’s singles title after beating Daisi Kukljan in the final (4-2, 4-1, 10-4) at the Wodonga Tennis Centre on Saturday.
“It has indeed been an incredible journey to be a huge supporter and contributor to such a milestone achievement in PNG’s tennis history. The feeling is indescribable. Witnessing Colita’s growth and success has brought joy to all of us involved,” mum Diana Hasavi said.
“As parents, Raymond and I, supporting Coco’s aspirations and dreams of becoming the best tennis player comes with its challenges.
“Ensuring that she receives the necessary training, resources, and opportunities to develop her skills and reach her full potential requires a significant commitment of time, effort, and financial resources.
“However, seeing her passion and determination, we are motivated to provide support and encouragement along the way. It is a collaborative effort involving the entire family,” she told The National.
Hasavi said watching Colita achieve such great results as a young girl lies in a combination of factors.
“Coco possesses exceptional talent and natural ability. Her dedication, hard work, and passion for the sport have been instrumental in her success. She has had a supportive and nurturing environment, with a team of coaches, mentors, and family members who have guided her throughout her journey.
“The significance of Coco setting records not only for PNG but also in the Oceania and Australia as a whole is immense.
