HENRY Miube has left teaching to try his hand in the PMV business because of the improved state of the road from Kundiawa to Gewa, in Chimbu.
He is convinced that the completion of the 10.6km road will increase economic activities and boost local businesses.
Contractor Shorncliffe started working on the road in 2012. It was a single lane road mostly covered in thick undergrowth.
He had to negotiate with landowners to widen the road.
About 50,000 people in the area are excited about the new road – including Miube, who has bought a PMV truck to start his business.
“In the past, this road stretch was very bad and we normally walk to Kundiawa,” he said.
“When the road reconstruction started, I used the money I had to buy a truck.
“I believe that the road will be even better.
“We used to push and pull vehicles on the many bad sections but the road is really improved.”
Miube said he was now earning between K300 and K400 a day.
Fellow PMV driver from Gembogl Rolf Gorowa said they usually charged higher fares on farmers to transport their bags of vegetables to the market because of the length of time it took to travel on the bad road.
“Paying for broken springs has been one of our headaches as operators,” Gorowa said.
