NEW Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan, has urged his people to follow rules in Kavieng as it is becoming a city.
The New Ireland government has recently enacted the Vagrancy Act, Beetle nut Act, Littering Act and the Liberalisation of Beer Act.
Sir Julius said: “Kavieng town is moving into a Bilas city. Now the people must help to keep it clean and have pride in our city.
“There should be no buai chewing or drinking in public places, no littering and no throwing of old shoes over power lines.”
“Anyone who breaks these laws will be dealt with accordingly.
“Under the Vagrancy Act, New Irelanders too are held liable, and to be sent back to their villages if they cause trouble in Kavieng town.”
Sir Julius has instructed a contractor building the Kavavu four lane road to double its shift and complete the road by this year.
The project started in August 2018 and was divided into two phases.
The first phase is from the airport to the courthouse and the second phase will be from the courthouse to town and waterfront.
Twelve solar street lights have also been installed along Tabar Terrace, lighting up the Kavieng golf course and the governor’s official residence, adding to the existing solar street lights along Kavavu Avenue, Rawal, Kulangit, Omo and Sivasat.
Sir Julius said there was a long-term development plan for Kavieng and the current changes occurring in town, including the relocation of the market, was part of the bigger picture.
