Kavieng market to relocate due to repair

KAVIENG market will be moved to a new location in the Bagail area since the current location will undergo foreshore developments, according to New Ireland administrator Lamiller Pawut.
Speaking during a peace ceremony with the landowners after a goror (stop sign) was placed at the construction site of the new market, he explained to them that the land was state land and there was no trespassing involved.
The Bagail landowners put a stop to the construction work after not being consulted. The landowners removed the stop sign at the peace ceremony to allow work to continue.
Pawut said the resolving of the stalemate through the traditional way was a win-win for both parties.
The new market will cost up to K2 million and is expected to be completed in six months.
Governor Sir Julius Chan was happy with the peace negotiation and wanted the project to be completed quickly.
The old beach market site will be converted to a foreshore esplanade for tourists and visitors.
