A HEADLESS body was found floating at the berthing station of Lutheran Shipping at Voco Point in Lae on Sunday, Lae Met Supt Chris Kunyanban says.
Chief Supt Kunyanban said the body was badly decomposed and also missing both legs.
“We believe it may have been in the sea for quite some time, maybe for more than two or three weeks,” he said.
Chief Supt Kunyanban said there were no missing person reports filed by coastal villages in Morobe over the past few months.
The body is at the Angau Memorial Hospital where an autopsy will reveal its gender.
Chief Supt Kunyanban said investigations were ongoing.
In a separate incident, a fuel vendor at Voco Point was stabbed on the shoulder and robbed of K11,000 on Friday.
Chief Supt Kunyanban said the woman in her late 30s sold fuel to boat operators.
She was robbed by five suspects armed with homemade guns and bush knives. The woman was stabbed and a shot was fired near her head, forcing her to release the bag with the money.
Chief Supt Kunyanban said the suspects got in a boat but its motor stalled delaying their escape.
The robbers fired two shots to scare off the public just as police arrived on scene and more gun shots were exchanged.
“Most of the homemade guns and knives used were thrown into the sea as police approached,” he said.
“Four were arrested and charged with armed robbery, while one is still at large. The victim’s belongings and cash were not recovered.”
