THE Molot health centre on Duke of York Island in Kokopo, East New Britain (ENB), will undergo a renovation costing K624,600.
Kokopo MP Emil Tammur said the money would be drawn from the district services improvement programme fund.
The funding was approved following an assessment of the run-down facility by technical staff recently.
Tammur said the Molot health centre served more than 9,000 people.
“The renovation project will include repairs to five staff houses which have fallen into disrepair and the main hospital facility,” he said. The health centre was opened in 2010 but has never undergone any renovation.
“The move to immediately carry out the renovation was made in the light of the situation involving church-run service which face imminent scaling down due to lack of government funding,” Tammur said.
“In Kokopo, we have two church-run health facilities – the St Mary’s Vunapope Hospital and the Vatnabar health centre run by the United church on Duke of York Island.”
The health centre recorded 122 deliveries and 9,711 attendances in 2018.
