Heavy rain causes landslide at Watabung section

National, Normal

CONTINUOUS rain has caused a massive landslide which completely cut off  the Highlands Highway at Watabung section yesterday morning.
Traffic between Simbu and Eastern Highlands provinces is in total disarray.
Simbu provincial police commander Supt Joseph Tondop warned motorists and trucking firms to avoid travelling in heavy rain.
“Three landslides have already occurred. But the other two were minor incidents,” Supt Tondop said.
“The landslides have brought mud, stones, logs and other debris on the highway, making it difficult for road users to manoeuvre,” he said.
He said travellers were left stranded at both sides of the highway, passengers cross over the debris by foot to change to PMVs to continue their journey.
He informed the authorities in Eastern Highlands to arrange with the provincial works to clear the landslide and the debris to reopen highway.
