HEKARI United have kicked off their 2021 academy programme with the aim of developing upcoming players at an early age to pursue a career in football.
Veteran Hekari midfielder and Papua New Guinea international David Muta said the academy would target children between eight and 16 years old.
“I want to train children because I’ve seen older players struggle,” he said.
“We have to give back to children, so we’re keen on teaching them the basics.
“Many players learn the basics at an older age and we have to change that.
“Small things like how to pass and kick the ball, and communicate. These are things that will help players improve.
“So when they grow up to play in bigger competitions, it will be easier for them since they’ve learned the basics at an early age.” Muta said the next generation of footballers from the academy had the potential to help Papua New Guinea qualify for the World Cup.
