DIGICEL Cup franchise Hela Wigmen beat Kimbe’s 15 City Roosters 10-6 to claim the Sepik Agmark Nines Cup at Pora Oval in Wewak, East Sepik, last weekend.
“We fielded Kroton Wigmen which comprised development, extended and first-grade squad members,” Wigmen chief executive Patrick Wundai told The National.
“We had good wins against some of the best teams who were competitive all tournament.
“It was a good game against teams like Colts, Laumas and 15 City Roosters.
“Our purpose to participate in Agmark Sepik 9s is to support Sepik Pride’s Digicel Cup bid as we have a good connection with the people of Sepik, from where we believe our brand name ‘Kroton’ originated.”
Wundai said although it was a costly exercise to take a 24-man contingent, including support staff, to the East Sepik capital, the title triumph was worth it.
“We actually didn’t aim to win, it was more like the team’s pre-season holiday trip,” he said.
“But champions don’t shy away from opportunities.
“The win was a bonus, given our purpose of participating in the competition.
“I credit our boys who put their bodies on the line for the six games that we won.
“I also acknowledge rookie coach Seth Rip, assistant coach and trainer Ben Hetra, as well as team manager Mackdelyn Kos.
“We would like to dedicate the Cup to Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited managing director Wapu Sonk for sponsoring the team and making the win possible.
“I also congratulate Sepik Pride project manager Bradley Simon and the Agmark Group of Companies for making this tournament possible.
“The teams have a lot of potential and I won’t be surprised to see some of the players slotted in any Digicel Cup team.
“We’re looking forward to defending our title in next year’s tournament.”
