HELA Wigmen have kicked off their offseason with the Digicel Cup team eyeing a strong campaign in next month’s Agmark Nines rugby league tournament in Wewak, East Sepik.
Wigmen chief executive Patrick Wundai told The National earlier this week that they would compete in the tournament which was scheduled for Nov 26-27.
“We’re preparing for the Agmark Nines which part of our preparations in the offseason,” he said.
“We were supposed to compete in the tournament last year, but were late in submitting our registration.
“So now we’ve just forwarded the costs from last year to compete in 2021.
“We have a team in place and ready to go.
“But like all other things happening in the country, we have to wait and see what the situation will be like once authorities make their assessment.
“I’ve been in contact with tournament host Bradley Simon.
“Any opportunity to show our support and be part of a tournament like this in the rugby league community, will be great.”
Wundai said part the offseason was involving their SP Hunters players in their preparations.
“A few of our Hunters players may compete in the tournament and we hope their involvement can help with team-building in the offseason,” he said.
“We’ve been in contact with them since their return from Australia last month.
“So it will also be a good opportunity for them to come back to the team and get some game time.”
