Help sought for West Papua

Letters

This is the time to think of others, especially neighbours, friends and relatives.
Our closest neighbour is West Papua, in Indonesia, which is on the same landmass as PNG and shares the same climate and seasons as us.
Our peoples are alike; we are both Melanesians and have common traditions and cultures.
PNG achieved its independence on Sept 16, 1975, while West Papua’s attempt for freedom on December 1, 1961, failed at Jayapura, so Indonesia re-colonised them against their will.
People were tortured and killed for not accepting Indonesian rule.
Their history has become tales to their children because they were born without knowing where came from.
If Indonesia grants West Papua independence, the two will develop a friendly relationship, no doubt, just like PNG and Australia today.
Papua New Guineans, let’s stand up for those who cannot speak and speak for them.
Support West Papua.
