Here’s how UPNG can save money

Letters

HERE are a few tips for the University of Papua New Guinea to save money and generate income:

• Sell all top-of-the-range Ford Ranger dual cab utility and SUV vehicles recently bought for senior admin people and replace them with standard sedans;
• Cease wasteful “study” junkets for university executives and their cronies;
• Improve the facilities division so that repairs and maintenance to halls of residence and other facilities are carried out efficiently;
• Renovate unused halls of residence, negotiate an agreement with the PNGIA and LTI, and lease facilities to out-of-town public servants and students at those respective institutions;
• Renovate and maintain the Motupore Island Research Centre, enter into an agreement with NCDC, the Nature Park management and the Department of Justice and Attorney General, and convert the island into a research centre and marine park; and
• Re-establish a reinvigorated UniVentures and improve research capabilities for academics and postgraduate students so that the university can earn revenue from patented or copyrighted works.
Parents, sponsors and students do not deserve to bear the consequences of the university administration’s wasteful spending and incompetence.
