THE Highlands Besta Cup qualifiers head into day three of competition, with 10 men’s and six women’s teams looking to earn the right to represent the region in Lae next month.
PNG Football Association acting-president John Gonjuan and Chimbu Governor Michael Dua kicked off the five-day tournament on Tuesday.
Simbu Soccer Association president Daina Uran confirmed that 16 teams were competing at the Dickson Oval for spots in the Lae finals.
According to Uran, Goroka fielded a female and two male teams. Kainantu fielded a men and women’s side.
“Hosts Simbu contributed nine teams — three from the Yongomugl area, and two each from Tabare, Waiye and Kerowagi,” Uran said.
“Associations like Mt Hagen and Kundiawa sent only a male team.”
The tournament ends with the grand final on Saturday.
Day one results: Men’s division – Simbu 2 Tabare 0, Apo Three 1 Apo One 1, Kainantu 2 Yongomugl 0; Women’s division – Kainantu 0 Simbu 0, Goroko 1 Yongomugl 0.
