Into its fifth weekend, the Lae City Hockey Association’s junior programme has seen interest growing among youngsters in the Morobe capital.
Coordinator Julius Raoma said he had been taking the children through basic hockey skills.
“We are helping children become better hockey players,” Raoma said.
“If they learn the basic requirements of hockey, we will run a little competition.” Raoma said he would compile a report for the association president to make recommendations regarding a children’s competition.
Raoma told The National that the number of participants during the first three weekends was fewer than 50.
But that number had swelled beyond 100 after word about the programme had spread.
“As of last weekend, the number of kids attending the minky hockey programme stood at 137. It’s fun and exciting.” Raoma is assisted by Roberta Walo and Pomat Kanamon, and mothers who tag along with their children to assist with implementing the programme.
Meanwhile, the men’s games last weekend saw Poroman beat 3-Mile 3-0, Rapatona defeated Iruba 2-0, and Sunam-Kasens and Brothers-Sandpipers games ended in stalemates.
In the women’s competition, Wanderers hammered Sister 8-0, Iruba edged Rapatona 4-3 and Poromeri beat 3-Mile 8-1.
