HOHOLA Demonstration shut out Kila Kila Secondary to win 12-0 in an Under-18 girls curtain-raiser to yesterday’s Digicel Cup preliminary final at Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby.
In another match prior to the Rabaul Gurias-Hela Wigmen clash, Kaugere Primary beat Taurama Primary 6-0.
The teams are part of the National Capital District Schools Rugby League (NCDSRL) which kicked off its short season yesterday.
“I would like to thank the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) for sanctioning this programme and letting us use the stadium for our season,” NCDSRL president Arnold Gende said.
“It’s a relief for the board and the eight affiliated schools to have their girls participate in the programme as well.” He said it was part of the constitution that in order to participate in the NSRL, a student had to perform well in school.
“Is a challenge to all the children who would like to play rugby, to perform well in school to be eligible to play,” Gende said.
PNGRFL game development manager Toksy Nema said: “Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are only concentrating on the U18s for this season.”
The competition will run for seven weeks to prepare the schools for the inclusion of all divisions next year.
“The programme is aimed at developing good, young rugby league players by instilling in them.
