Homebrew not a winning ticket, students told

Education

Stay away from homebrew, study hard and the world’s your oyster, grade 8 students of a remote school in Bulolo, Morobe, were told at their graduation.
Thirty-three students graduated from Zendiga Primary School.
“Complete your education and the world is yours to conquer,” guest, Bulolo Primary School inspector Kwinda Trenian said.
“Don’t think that your education has come to an end and you start drinking homebrew and become a nuisance in the community.
“The remoteness of this school makes it very hard to get an education but to become successful, students, parents and teachers need to work hard.”
Trenian said the students were responsible for their own education.
He commended Wafi-Golpu Joint Venture, which was represented at the function by community engagement superintendent Dollie Kumgi, for continuing to support education in the region under its education support programme.
The venture presented awards to selected schools in its exploration footprint.
The awards included first, second, third prizes; most-improved; regular attendance to class for grade 2 students in 10 elementary schools; and the dux awards for grade 8 students in three primary schools.
Kumgi said Wafi-Golpu Joint Venture would continue to support education in the region and hoped that would motivate students to do better in future.
The school dux was Karo Dima, who aspires to be a teacher. He thanked the company for its assistance.
Head teacher Okam Wanuru said the award was one way of boosting the students’ morale.
Since 2010, the venture has invested more than K2 million in educational infrastructure and support programmes like teacher training and tuition support for students in its project area.
