‘Honey producers need support’

LOCAL honey producers are earning a good income from their efforts but more needs to be done to support the industry, a farmer says.
Tella Loie, from Bena, Eastern Highlands, said there were many honey farmers in Eastern Highlands but they needed help from the relevant Government agencies to improve their product and increase volume.
“We are now in the honey season, which usually falls from October to November, and we have about 300 bee keepers in Bena and we need to provide proper markets for them,” Loie said. “Farmers are doing great and the sales made from their honey help them with their financial needs.
“I provide basic bee-keeping equipment to the farmers, including technical advice to 1,000-plus honey farmers with 5,000 to 6,000 bee hives in Eastern Highlands.”
