KARKAR Secondary School in Sumkar, Madang, received K100,000 from the provincial executive council (PEC) through Governor Peter Yama on Monday to complete the final quarter of the year.
The cheque presented to principal Jeremiah Buza following a commitment made mid this year by Yama.
The school is a major institution in the district with more than 1,000 students, but has faced funding constraints. However, the funding will help complete the fourth term of the school year.
The cheque presentation was witnessed by representatives from the provincial administration, as well as the district office and the local level government.
“Under PEC’s ‘going rural’ policy, this money will help you and the school administration to continue until the end of the school year,” Yama said.
He said he had also made a commitment to provide computers for the school which would be delivered in the final weeks of the term.
Yama said under the “going rural” policy, a boys only vocational centre would be built on Long Island and another one for girls would be built at Bagbag Island.
Both schools will cost K3 million each to establish.
Yama said his focus on education was part of his “zero drop-out” initiative to train school leavers with useful technical and life skills.
Principal Buza thanked Yama for the funding assistance.
He said the money would help offset the school’s operational costs.
