THE Hope Cup, a rugby league nines tournament promoting peace and unity at Momei Oval in Mendi, Southern Highlands, is set to run from Dec 10-13.
The Hope Cup which was initiated by National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop during a visit to the province last December is expected to attract talent from Mendi-Munihu district and other parts of the province.
The tournament which aims to foster peace and unity in Southern Highlands, especially after election related violence, is sponsored by the provincial government.
Deputy provincial administrator Fiebik Kilip told The National that the provincial government was keen to promote rugby league in the province.
He said the tournament offered a platform for the province’s talent to be exposed and possibly be recruited by the Mendi Muruks.
Kilip said the Hope Cup had a positive impact on the community with young people getting involved and people coming together to enjoy the competition and interact with each other.
He said the event would be held annually and had been sanctioned by the PNG Rugby Football League.
He said the success of the inaugural Hope Cup last year had paved way for it to become an annual event which Governor Parkop and Southern Highlands Governor William Powi pledged support.
He said sport was an effective vehicle for promoting positive messages and bringing people together.
Coordinator Nenga Nandape said last year’s tournament saw 20 teams from the five districts participating and more numbers were expected for this year’s edition.
He said the organising committee had also invited other Highlands provinces to send teams.
He said there would also be a women’s division in the Hope Cup.
“It is something for our young boys and girls that we are proud to host and support is needed from everyone.”
Nandape said last year’s tournament was a success and four players were recruited by the Muruks.
