THE Government is funding cancer facilities in Port Moresby and Lae and hopes to get the national cancer unit in Lae completed soon, says Health Minister Jelta Wong.
He said for the Port Moresby unit, Kumul Holdings Ltd would provide funding in the coming weeks to enable construction to continue.
“Both cancer facilities are vital to our people and the Government is giving its best to making sure that the facilities are completed and manned to serve the people,” Wong said.
He could not give an exact time on when the facilities would be ready for use and said the Government was doing all it could to get them completed and equipped as soon as possible.
Wong said the government would spend about K150 million on the facilities.
He said since the country did not have a radiation oncologist, the Government was also looking at recruiting specialists from overseas. He confirmed that all equipment for the cancer facilities in be Port Moresby and Lae would be brought into the county as soon as the facilities were ready and certified.
Wong said the Government was also reviving rural health posts around the country to improve basic health services for the people.
He said this would be done through the provincial health authorities with funding from the Government.
