Horror on the highway

Letters

WITH respect for those who died in the recent road accident at Imbonggu in Southern Highlands, I want to say we the people of Hela have suffered in so many circumstances caused by our very own brothers back home.
Travellers resort to 10-seater vehicles as there are hardly any PMV buses now operating from Mendi to Tari and Hagen to Tari vice-versa.
So many hold-ups at Ambua Gap and at Tengo subsequently has contributed to registered PMVs ceasing operations.
As such illegal, unregistered vehicles use these routes to make fast money without thinking of the lives of people they are ferrying.
The bus fare charged by these unregistered PMV, mostly 10-seater vehicles is equal the sum you pay from Hagen to Lae and Lae back to Goroka.
No more PMV is interested in travelling to Tari because of the so many guerillas, rebels and modern road evils at Ambua Gap.
The safest way to travel to Tari now is by plane out of Hagen.
Police should be doing frequent highway patrols between Ambua and Nipa.
Otherwise, one cannot imagine the horror you have to cope with when travelling along this once-beautiful country road.
