The fraud squad has arrested and charged Popondetta Hospital chief executive Dr Gunzi Gawin with misuse, abuse and mismanagement of office.
Provincial police commander Chief Superintendent David Welly said Dr Gawin has been released on bail.
“The fraud squad was in Popondetta for about two weeks and they have arrested and charged Dr Gawin with three counts – conspiracy to defraud, misappropriation of property and abuse of office.
Dr Gawin was interviewed on Thursday and the three charges were laid against him so he will appear in court and follow the normal process.
“I allowed him on recognition bail (ORB) being the chief exeutive officer of the hospital and a prominent person in an organisation,” Welly said. Welly has also received a complaint from Dr Gawin who said that a senior medical officers’ contract had expired and had not been renewed.
“In frustration of that, he (senior medical officer) had allegedly damaged the door of his office and threatened the chief executive and another senior officer,” Welly said.
“A complained was laid with the police and this medical officer was charged consequently and it’s up to the courts now to deliberate on that.”
Meanwhile, police in Popondetta have arrested a suspect after a man was killed at the SBS compound a week ago.
Welly said police had received the report of the case but were yet to confirm further details of the incident.
