THE United church’s Nixon Memorial congregation in Hula, Central, will launch a five-year fundraising plan on Oct 8 to build a multi-purpose building to replace the old fellowship hall.
The launch is expected to draw wide interest from private and corporate sponsors in Port Moresby plus churches and individuals in Hula through its weekend programme to be held in the village.
Organising committee member Numa Walo said they hoped to raise K300,000 for the double-storey building.
The building will house 10 transit rooms on top and a fellowship hall and storeroom on the ground level.
“Our congregation has been using the old women’s fellowship hall for 28 years and it is run down and unfit for use,” he said.
“The walls, ceiling, windows, doors and roof are broken and rotting.”
He said limited space was another problem they faced.
“The number of women using the hall has increased over the past years.
“We see it a need to replace the old one to cater for the women’s activities plus other church and community activities,” he said.
The shelter was built in 1983 by the women’s fellowship group of Hula.
Through the years plans for a new building had failed.
The fundraising plan includes activities like a corporate dinner, clean-a-thon, walk-a-thon, and bringing and buying of food.
Among the list of guests are Agriculture and Livestock Minister Sir Puka Temu and Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister Ano Pala.
