RUGBY league fans in Papua New Guinea will finally get to see SP PNG Hunters’ away games on television, starting with Sunday’s round 10 Q-Cup match against the Wynnum Manly Seagulls.
PNG Rugby Football League chief executive Reatau Rau said the Hunters’ major sponsor SP Brewery and the league had shared the K220,000 cost of broadcasting the remaining regular– season away matches live.
“The SP Hunters away games will be televised live, starting this weekend and this was made possible through a partnership with SP Brewery,” Rau said.
“Digicel through its TV Wan platform will televise the rest of the Hunters six away games this season at a cost of A$15,000 (K36,600) per match. “An overseas-based production team which TV Wan uses will do the coverage but we are in discussions with TV Wan to minimise costs by having TV Wan themselves try and do some of the production,” Rau said.
“This is great news for fans.
“On Sunday, you will be able to watch the SP Hunters take on the Wynnum Manly Seagulls in Brisbane at 3pm through Digicel on their TV WAN+ channel.”
Rau thanked SP Brewery for partnering with PNG Rugby Football League to bring the remaining away games live to fans who missed the six away games so far this season.
“This should motivate and inspire the Hunters players to perform better, knowing that everybody in the country will be watching,” he said.
Rau said the Digicel Cup games would continue to be televised live by TV Wan on the Events channel.
“There’ll be Hunters and Digicel Cup games on TV for everyone in PNG,” he said.
