A 49-YEAR-OLD woman charged with dangerous driving causing the death of another person in Port Moresby last month made her first appearance at the Waigani Committal Court last Wednesday.
Police alleged that on Dec 22, last year, at around 6am, Stephanie Tama, of Saha village in Lorengau, Manus, dangerously drove a grey Toyota Harrier along Waiwai Avenue in Boroko, causing the death of Angus Bebendo from Tari in Hela.
It was alleged that at the time and location, Tama was with her husband when they encountered the accident.
Police alleged that Tama drove off swinging the vehicle to her left side and along the footpath and hit Bebendo. According to the summary of facts, after the accident, Tama presented herself to the Boroko Police Station.
She was later called in for a record of interview.
Tama was arrested and charged and then placed at the Boroko cells. She was later released on bail.
Magistrate Billy Pidu read the charge to her.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Joseph Sangam asked the court to set conditions due to the seriousness of the matter.
Magistrate Pidu ordered Tama to attend court sittings at all times, not to interfere with potential State witnesses, not to leave the National Capital District without permission from the court.
Tama was also ordered to report to the Waigani court clerk on Wednesdays between 9am and 3pm on a fortnightly basis.
The matter returns to court on March 2.
