AN eight-year-old boy drowned after he was swept away while swimming at the 17-Mile picnic area outside Port Moresby on Sunday.
The boy was swimming in the river with his family members and friends when he was swept underwater and disappeared.
With the help of communities, the boy was found about 30 minutes later not far from the scene.
However, St John Ambulance paramedics could not revive the child.
St John paramedic Jacquie Hennesy said this was a tragic reminder of the dangers of swimming in fast flowing rivers, especially after rain storms.
