Institute inks MoU with Malaysian counterpart

THE National Institute of Standards and Industrial Technology (Nisit) has partnered with its counterpart in Malaysia to protect Papua New Guinea against unsafe and subpar products, and promote measurement and technical standards.
The Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (Sirim) president and group chief executive officer Dato’ Indera IR Dr Ahmad Sabirin Arshad said after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in Malaysia recently the deal would strengthen standardisation and enhanced industrial activities in PNG with Sirim providing a range of services such as testing, education and medical assistance.
“This cooperation will inadvertently safeguard PNG against unsafe and subpar products, promote measurement and technical standards for commerce and industry and improve the country’s industrial efficiency,” he said.
The Nisit team to Malaysia was led by acting director-general Victor Gabi and included managers Noah Sapak and Benzamine Zairo.
Commerce and Industry secretary David Ganai said the deal would strengthen oversight capacity.
The ceremony occurred in the city of Shah Alam, which is where the headquarters of Sirim is located.
Gabi said: “Our country needs to grow the industry because many businesses there do not have a proper site to do cross-checking and balancing, and we hope the MOU can help to advance the industrial development to a higher level.”
Gabi said the deal is to promote cooperation between the two parties in areas of natural science, engineering and technology, medical and health science, agricultural sciences, social science and humanities, promoting technology transfer and commercialisation corporation; and other research areas, as mutually agreed by the parties.
